January 2009 issue 002
After months of speculations about the Abflug Curve new Demo Toyota MR-S, we could finally have a look on the final product.
When you stand in front of that car, one thing is clear: This is the best looking and best executed body conversion kit for the MR-S spyder!
JDM FRONTIER issue 002 . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
AKD MRX DEMO CAR
Abflug from OSAKA is known for an extravagance in body kit styling. Their creations are very controversial, but there is no doubt that all their body conversion kits are of high quality materials and finish. So is this one.

Now if you think how possibly Abflug came to the idea of producing this kit, obvious homage to the Porsche Carrera GT, then you might be interested to hear that the order of production of this demo car didn't come from Abflug-Curve at all!

In fact
H.AMEMIYA made a design drawing about 6 years ago and forgot about it completely.  Then comes AKD or better known as AnyoKIng in the game and gives the designs to Abflug to make this project reality.
But who is AnyoKing?

We don't know it easer, but he is some funny guy, who runs a site about Porsche Caymans (Anyoking). This individual customizes Porsches and is part of the Cayman racing team in Japan. Maybe the founds and back up for the MRX project came from him, as he is quoted,  being the "MRX projector".

Anyway let's get back to the car it self. First of all, good news, it's gonna be a complete car sold through Abflug in the same order as the pervious Abflug cars, like their 300ZX, to name only one. So we are not talking about a streight available body kit that can be purchased as the Veilside MR-S fortune kit or the Shorin GT kit. The AKD MRX is offered in two versions:
SPEC-R and SPEC-A:

Spec-R would be the complete MRX car (same as the demo car), with possible exterior and interior color and trim options. The Demo car has also a Turbo kit, upping the power to tasty 200HP.
Sales price: 4.900.000Yen

Spec-A again the same menu, just keeping the engine standard.
Sales price: 3.800.000Yen

The MRX is using tail-light clusters from Porsche.
The Wing and exhaust vents are styled like the Porsche Carrera GT back end. Despite that, does the MRX kit take many free style elements to keep it unique as a howl and tries to be different in the details and overall proportions.

The greatest difference to the Carrera-GT proportions is the much smaller wheel base of the MR-S spyder, so you don't think automaticly about the GT, when looking at the MRX . . . and this is a good thing, we don't go in the replica direction here.

The front lights are complete custom works and give the car a unique facial. Using original Porsche 911 headlights would have been too obvious and would have again brought up the "copycat" image.  All in one the new, much wider proportions of the MRX, are very close to the Veilside Fortune kit. The demo MRX had one miss-match on the styling side and that were the wheels choice and size. Those chrome rims are pretty thought, but have completely the wrong offset, despite being chosen for being wider, in order to match the new wide fenders.  A pair of BBS or Te37s with bigger wheel spacers would have given the car a beefier look on the wheels.
The interior is pretty standard, racing seats, some silver colored dash materials and red leather. The only thing that is added, is the center console from Abflug. It completely replaces the existing MR-S console and gives the cockpit a more quality feeling.
Quality and a little spice of premium image, is what the creators of this car wanted to achieve.
We think that they have succeeded in this terrific work and gave us a new japanese sports car to desire, despite the sports car industry slowly going down the gutter in japan.
